This rapid rise has sparked a pressing public debate: can AI systems ever be ethical? To explore this question, we’ll dive into the ethical implications of AI through two contrasting paradigms: Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and Artificial General Decision-Making (AGD™).
AGI refers to a hypothetical AI with human-level (or beyond) cognitive abilities, while AGD™ is a newer framework focused on using multi-agent systems to augment human decision-making. The public debate isn’t just academic – it’s about real people affected by automated decisions every day. In short, ensuring AI systems are ethical is key to making better decisions that earn public trust and lead to positive outcomes, rather than reinforcing inequity or causing harm.
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and Its Ethical Challenges
One of the most charged topics in AI ethics is the pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) – the kind of AI that could, in theory, perform any intellectual task a human can, and possibly outthink us entirely. Scholars argue that AGI ethics is fundamentally about mitigating existential risk. In other words, an AGI gone rogue or misused could threaten humanity’s well-being or even existence. Key issues include:
- The Alignment Problem: How to guarantee an AGI’s goals are aligned with human values? An AGI might develop unexpected strategies to fulfill its objectives that conflict with our morals or safety (think of the proverbial genie that grants wishes in harmful ways).
- Unpredictability and Loss of Control: Unlike narrow AI, a true AGI could rewrite itself or make novel decisions beyond its initial programming. This unpredictability is worrisome – even its creators might not understand or control its actions.

We have made strides in intelligent automation and narrow AI (like AI that beats humans at chess, Go, or that powers your Netflix recommendations), but those systems are specialized, not general thinkers. A recent analysis pointed out that AGI is “still at the stage of infancy” – most of the discourse relies more on imagination than concrete data. In fact, many researchers doubt we’ll see human-level AGI for decades (if ever). Nonetheless, the ethical debate is not waiting for AGI to arrive.
In contrast to this high-stakes uncertainty, Artificial General Decision-Making (AGD™) offers a safer, more grounded alternative. By emphasizing augmentation over autonomy, AGD™ leverages multi-agent systems to enhance human decision-making rather than replace it. This model not only sidesteps the existential risks associated with unchecked AGI, but also aligns more naturally with ethical principles like transparency, accountability, and human-in-the-loop oversight. As such, AGD™ presents a compelling framework for achieving AI progress without compromising societal stability or human agency.
Ethical AGD™ vs. AGI: A “Human or Machine” Centered Future?
A useful way to frame the AGI debate is to ask: Should we be trying to replicate human intelligence, or augment it?
The AGI vision leans toward replication – creating an autonomous, possibly independent intelligence. An alternative vision gaining traction is augmentation: using AI to complement and extend human capabilities rather than replace them. Stanford professor and economist Erik Brynjolfsson calls this avoiding the “Turing Trap” – the false notion that the pinnacle of AI is to mimic humans, instead of empowering humans. “Both automation and augmentation can create benefits and both can be profitable,” Brynjolfsson notes, “but right now a lot of technologists…are focused on automation,” whereas augmentation might yield more human-friendly outcomes.
This is where Artificial General Decision-Making (AGD™) comes into play, as a contrasting framework to AGI. AGD™ is explicitly about human-centric AI: rather than building one super-smart brain in a box, AGD™ envisions a society of AIs working with and for people. The term, coined by the company Klover.ai in 2023, refers to “the creation of systems designed to enhance human decision-making capabilities”. A famous public sector case study occurred in the UK in 2020, when the national exam regulator Ofqual used an algorithm to moderate students’ A-level grades (since COVID-19 cancelled exams). The intent was to prevent grade inflation by using a statistical model, but the result was chaos and outcry. The algorithm systematically downgraded students from historically lower-performing schools, igniting claims of class bias and unfairness. Within days of results being released – and protests by students with signs like “Your algorithm doesn’t know me” – the plan was scrapped.
